Approximately 60 miles or one hours
drive north of Inverness, the fishing village of Ullapool is
ideally placed for you to explore the Highlands and many Islands
of the west coast of Scotland.
Ullapool
itself was built by the British Fisheries Society in 1788, the
main part of the village around the sea loch and harbour having
been designed by Thomas Telford.
Benwell
House is in the original part of the village, now a conservation
area.
Whilst
retaining the charm of its original design and purpose, Ullapool
now offers a range of facilities for visitors and locals. We
have modern shopping outlets along with a vast range of craft
and local shops.
We also
have a considerable number of bars and restaurants, many of
which serve great food made from award winning local produce.
The village is nestled on a
sheltered natural harbour in Loch Broom. The location has had
settlements dating back thousands of years - the view across the
loch is to Dun Lagaidh, a Pictish fort - and the name Ullapool
is derived from the Norse ‘Ulla-Bolstadr’ meaning ‘Ulla's
steading’, evidence of the Viking influence. |
